Woman, Her 2-Year Old Son Die After Under-Construction Metro Pillar Collapses In Bengaluru

In a shocking incident, a mother and her two-and-a-half-year-old son reportedly died after an under-construction metro pillar collapsed in Bengaluru near the Hennur area on Tuesday.

Woman, child died in hospital

The deceased were identified as 25-year-old Tejaswini and her son, Vihaan.

As per reports, the pillar hit the mother’s chest and the son’s head. 

The woman’s husband, Lohith, on whose bike they were travelling, and the twin daughter were also injured in the incident. The woman and her child succumbed to injuries in the hospital. 

“The couple along with their son was heading towards Hebbal. The metro pillar was overloaded and collapsed on the bike. The mother and son were pillion riders. They suffered grievous injuries and were shifted to Altis hospital.

They succumbed to the injuries at the hospital,”

Bheemashankar S Guled, DCP East, told India Today.

According to the traffic police, the mother died of internal bleeding while the son succumbed to a head injury. The mother was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

Chief Minister assures of detailed investigation

DCP Bheemashankar said a case has been registered and a probe into the matter is underway. He added that experts have reached the accident site to analyse the cause of the pillar collapse.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has promised an extensive inquiry into the mishap. 

“I just got to know about it, we will get it investigated. We will ascertain the reason for the collapse of the pillar and provide compensation,” he told reporters in Dharwad.

Financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the family

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh for the family. Anjum Parvez, Managing Director, BMRCL, said they will also launch an internal audit.

The metro railway pillar was being constructed on the road from Kalyan Nagar to HRBR Layout. Later, the accident led to severe traffic congestion at multiple junctions around Outer Ring Road.

Three people were said to be seriously injured in the incident.

Heavy traffic piled up in the area after the incident. Locals and commuters reportedly protested

against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP),

the city’s civic body, near the incident site.
