The Washington Redskins have two quarterbacks with a broken leg and a third named Mark Sanchez, but are still not interested in signing Colin Kaepernick.
After Colt McCoy was their latest quarterback to go down Monday night, thrusting Sanchez into the starting role moving forward, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said he didn’t expect to the team to bring in Kaepernick.
“There’s not a lot of time to get a brand-new quarterback and a system installed and taught in a couple of days,” Gruden told reporters Tuesday. “He has been talked about and discussed for sure, but we will probably go in a different direction.”
Meaning, it will be Sanchez who likely sees the Giants on Sunday, though Gruden did not rule out McCoy, even after undergoing surgery Tuesday.
With four games left in the season, the Redskins (6-6) are still in the playoff hunt but will be seemingly counting on Sanchez, the former Jet, to get them there.
Alex Smith broke his fibula and tibia in Week 11 before his backup, McCoy, broke his fibula against the Eagles on Monday. Sanchez went 13-of-21 for 100 yards and an interception without much knowledge of the playbook.
It doesn’t appear Kaepernick will get the same chance Sanchez did Monday — to play for the first time since the 2016 season.
“It’s about evaluating the skill set,” Gruden said. “If it was Week 1, there would be a better possibility.”
