Tennis – Former World No. 1 says she plans to play the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which would be her record-breaking sixth appearance at the Olympic Games. This ends the speculation for now at least that she will retire at the end of the 2019 season.
Williams is currently 38 years old and will be 40 years old when the Tokyo Olympics come around from 24th July to 9th August. Williams is currently ranked No. 39 in the world and after beating another former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the ASB Classic in Auckland, she was asked what motivates her to continue playing at this age, Williams responded: I play because I love the Olympics and I play because I guess I still can.
I guess those are my reasons. When asked if that meant she would be competing at the Tokyo Olympics, Williams promptly responded with a Yes, Yes. And 2024. And 2022 (Winter Olympics). Im going to be on the bobsleigh team.
I love playing at the Olympics for sure. When Williams makes her appearance in Tokyo, it would make her the only tennis player, male or female, in the history of the Olympic Games to compete in six editions. She will take on former champion Lauren Davis in the second round of the ASB Classic.
Williams has won four Olympic gold medals, one in singles and three in womens doubles, along with a silver medal in mixed doubles. She is the only tennis player to have won a medal at four Olympic Games and holds the record for most Olympic medals won by a male or female tennis player along with Kathleen McKane Godfree.
