Trailer drops for Eddie Murphy’s new movie, ‘Dolemite Is My Name’

The trailer dropped Monday for his new film, “Dolemite Is My Name,” which will be released in the coming months on the streaming platform.
In the comedy, directed by Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow”), Murphy plays Rudy Ray Moore, a real-life 1970s blaxploitation star who is trying to get his film career off the ground. (The real Moore starred in the “Dolemite” moves in the 1970s.) The movie also stars Keegan Michael-Key, Snoop Dogg, Tituss Burgess and Mike Epps.
“Dolemite” marks a major screen comeback for the 58-year-old Murphy, who has only made a handful of smaller, poorly received films, such as “Mr. Church” and “Tower Heist,” since his heyday. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2007 for “Dreamgirls,” and has continued to provide the voice of Donkey in the “Shrek” films.
For Murphy, one of the biggest stars of the ’80s and ’90s, when it rains it pours. Netflix has reportedly offered him $70 million for a new series of stand-up specials, and he’s said to be starring in two high-profile sequels: “Coming 2 America” and “Beverly Hills Cop 4.”
In line with Netflix’s usual pattern of secrecy, the “Dolemite Is My Name” trailer contains no firm release date — only “Coming Soon.” But the movie will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
