MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Toms River Mayor Daniel Rodrick is on leave indefinitely from his position as a teacher in the Middletown Township Schools.

Rodrick’s leave of absence was announced in a letter dated and emailed Thursday to parents of students at Thorne Middle School.

The letter says the district is “working to secure a qualified substitute to ensure continuity in your child’s education,” and was signed by Thorne Middle School Principal Shannon Smith. It was shared on social media by parents of Thorne students and sent to Patch.

Middletown Township Superintendent Jessica Alfone confirmed the authenticity of the letter but did not elaborate on its contents.

“This is unprecedented and the second time they have released my private personnel information,” Rodrick said in reply to a request for comment.

Rodrick has been represented this year by attorney Donald F. Burke in unspecified legal matters before the Middletown Township Board of Education, information that was confirmed after Burke’s hiring by Toms River in connection with ongoing litigation against the state Department of Environmental Protection over the NJDEP’s Ciba-Geigy natural resources damages settlement.

The nature of those matters has not been released by the district.

Rodrick has been criticized by some Toms River residents for continuing to work as a teacher while being the mayor of Toms River. His predecessors, Maurice Hill and Thomas Kelaher, were full-time mayors but both were retired from their professions.

Rodrick draws a $75,000 salary as mayor, and his teacher’s salary in Middletown was $106,200 as of Dec. 31, 2021, the most recent year available in the DataUniverse database.
