Todd Bowles puts focus on preventing Jets penalties

Penalties in Sunday’s loss to the Titans left Jets coach Todd Bowles fuming. On Wednesday, he went back to work trying to get his team to cut down on them.

“We work like heck on them, obviously individually and as a group,” Bowles said. “We keep them down during the week. Guys just have to concentrate at key times in the game.”

The Jets are nowhere near the most penalized team in the league — they are 20th, with 78 total penalties. But their penalties seem to always come at the most inopportune times. They seem to always commit penalties on third down or in key points in the game.

In Sunday’s loss, they had three penalties (one offsetting) on the Titans’ game-winning drive that helped Tennessee march down the field. They had 11 total penalties during the game.

“I feel like they’ve popped up at key situations, and you know you can’t have them, period, nevertheless at key times of the game, because those are the times you’ll remember,” Bowles said.

The players defended Bowles after the game, saying the penalties are not a reflection on their coach.

“We just have to hold each other accountable,” safety Jamal Adams said Wednesday. “We cannot make those mistakes in crucial times, and [we have to] limit penalties as much as possible. Obviously, those things happen, but we have to be smarter in certain situations.”

Adams was asked about comments he made Tuesday on the “CMB” show on WFAN, but he refused to answer them.

“I’m just not going to talk about it,” Adams said. “I’m focused on Buffalo right now. That’s my focus. After the season if you have any questions, we can handle that.”

During the radio interview, Adams cryptically blamed people other than Bowles for the Jets’ problems.

“Bowles is not the reason, he’s not the problem,” Adams said Tuesday on WFAN. “There are other problems in that building, and I feel for him. I really do.”

Bowles said safety Marcus Maye had shoulder surgery on Tuesday and that the recovery time is a “couple of months.” The Jets put Maye on injured reserve on Saturday. …

OLB Josh Martin, who has been on injured reserve since suffering a concussion in Week 4, returned to practice on Wednesday. The Jets have three weeks to decide whether to put him on the active roster. Against Jacksonville in September, Martin suffered his second concussion of the season and went on IR.
