On the agenda: Catalonia, Nigel Farage, unemployment.

On the podium: Commission deputy spokeswoman Mina Andreeva.

A side note: The Commission press room was almost empty today with only around 10 reporters in the room. Brussels journalists were mainly on the other side of the Schuman roundabout where the former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont was holding a press conference at 12:30 p.m.

Commission’s Catalan stance unchanged by Puigdemont visit: Andreeva said she was not aware of any meetings between Puigdemont and Commission officials. And despite Puigdemont staying in Brussels, Andreeva said the Commission’s “position remains unchanged,” meaning the Commission believes the conflict over Catalan independence should remain an internal Spanish matter rather than an EU one.

Nigel Farage is, of course, welcome: Andreeva said EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier’s door remains open to British politicians and anyone else interested in Brexit negotiations, including the U.K.’s Brexit champion Nigel Farage. The former leader of the U.K. Independence Party (UKIP) said on Monday night he had “had enough” with the state of Brexit talks and wanted to get involved himself, writing a letter to Barnier to set up a meeting with him in Brussels.

Unemployment continues to fall: Andreeva highlighted a report from the Commission’s statistical office, Eurostat, which showed the unemployment rate in the eurozone was at 8.9 percent in September, its lowest rate since January 2009.
