THE ALL-IRELAND finals in both football and hurling are moving from September to August on a temporary basis for the next three years.
Motion 5 passed with an overwhelming majority, meaning the All-Ireland finals in both codes will be played before the last Sunday in August on dates to be determined by Central Council.
For the first time since 1903, the All-Ireland finals will be held in August. Likely dates for the deciders next year:
- All-Ireland SHC final – August 13, 2018
- All-Ireland SFC final – August 27, 2018
It is hoped it will free up more time in the GAA calendar for the playing of club matches.
The motion passed by a margin of 78%-22%.
Motion 6 has also been passed which means replays in all inter-county championship matches will be done away with, apart from senior All-Ireland finals and provincial finals. Extra-time is now obligatory in all other cases.
The motion passed by a margin of 91%-9% and also comes in on a three-year trial.
