SARASOTA, FL — For the fifth consecutive year, the Leaders Rights Organization is hosting a Thanksgiving banquet for the community on Sunday, 5 p.m., at Fredd Atkins Park, 2431 Washington Court.
And the need in the community is greater than ever, so attendance is expected to double this year, Alaina Martinez, the group’s founder, told Patch.
“We want to bring unity during a timeframe when we all seem to be divided, honestly, whether it’s politics or recovering from the community, we want to bring unity,” she said. “We want to give everyone a break from the stresses of life and enjoy what I call family.”

The event caters to everyone from the houseless community to working class individuals, bringing them all together over common ground.
While the group normally serves a couple hundred plates during each Thanksgiving feast, Martinez expects at least 400 to show up this year.

“If not more,” she said. “We expect there to be way more people this year, especially with people displaced from hurricanes and people trying to recover at their own homes because they can’t cook, there are damages and electrical issues, or they lost so much and can’t provide their own Thanksgiving.”
Food donations are still needed for the event, including potatoes and canned goods, Martinez added.
They’re also looking for hygiene items donated as they will offer giveaways of hygiene bags, clothing, shoes and more. Volunteers are also needed that day.
“We have a lot to give to the community,” she said.
Any donations not used Sunday will be utilized during the group’s Christmas event, which doesn’t have a date yet.
Anyone interested in donating or volunteering should call or text Martinez or Bridget Adams at 941-580-8046
