TA boss wants Bernard Tomic – Lleyton Hewitt behind closed doors meeting

Tennis Australia performance boss Wally Masur would love to see a behind-the-closed-doors meeting between Bernard Tomic and Davis Cup Team Captain Lleyton Hewitt. Tomic launched an astonishing broadside at Hewitt after his Australian Open exit on Monday.

The 26-year-old said of the Australian captain that nobody likes him anymore and accused him of having a conflict of interest. Tomic also suggested that there is a rift between Hewitt and rising Australian stars Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Former world No. 17 Tomic also made it clear that he believes Hewitt should be replaced. Hewitt didnt want to get into a war of words with Tomic as he responded to the comments by saying that he had a bit of a laugh actually while reading them.

What I want to get away from is the public tennis game, it being played out in the press, Masur told AAP. Id rather those guys got in a room and they sort it out privately … and I think theres a chance.

The tournament is in full swing. I wouldnt say its on both of their agendas at the moment but it would be something I am keen to explore. Tomic hasnt played in the Davis Cup since 2016.

To be a good tennis player youve got to be stubborn, Masur added. And these guys have quite a past. Maybe theres a sense of frustration from Lleyton that Bernie hasnt maximized his potential.
