Not so fast, Rex.
As the Chiefs look to replace defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, who was fired Tuesday, they are targeting a former New York coach.
But while Rex Ryan was originally suggested as a candidate, now former Giants defensive coordinator and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo has become the favorite to land the job, according to ESPN.
Spagnuolo ran the Giants defense from 2007-08 — including ruining the Patriots’ perfect season in Super Bowl XLII — and again from 2015-17, which ended with replacing fired head coach Ben McAdoo for the final four games of 2017. He has history with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid after serving on his staff with the Eagles from 1999-2006.
Ryan has not been on the sidelines since getting fired as the Bills head coach in 2016. He was last a defensive coordinator for the Ravens in 2008 before taking over as head coach of the Jets in 2009.
Sutton was fired Tuesday after the Chiefs fell to the Patriots 37-31 in the AFC Championship game, ending a season in which his defense was ranked 31st in the league and allowed 26.3 points per game.
