Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka admits its frustrating to lose early at the Australian Open but insists that he is in good spirits. The 2014 Australian Open champion lost a tight second-round contest against Canadian Milos Raonic 6-7 (4) 7-6 (6) 7-6 (11) 7-6 (5).
The Swiss blew three set points during the third set tie-break. Yeah, for sure its frustrating to lose to guys, especially in a match with four tiebreakers. I think the level today was quite good. Im happy if I look the big picture.
Im happy with my level, the way I was moving, the way Im playing in general, Wawrinka said post-match. No. 16 seed Raonic fired 84 winners, 39 aces and won 84 percent of his first serve points during the match.
I think he also played really well. For sure, when its that tight, the match can change for one, two points. I miss few little points that could have changed the match, Wawrinka admitted. But he played better in general.
I think, yeah, its tough to lose second round. Its frustrating to lose early here, as I want to go deeper, I want to win more matches. Wawrinka made his return from knee surgery at Melbourne Park a year ago.
The Swiss looked far from his best fitness-wise and game-wise when he returned to competitive action. A year later, Wawrinkas game and fitness look much better as he is confident he will continue improving his game.
Again, if I take some distance, see a little bit everything Ive done the last few months to get at that level, Im quite happy. Im looking forward to the rest of the year, Wawrinka claimed.
