Sixth-tier Pays de Cassel players “cried tears of joy” following PSG cup draw

Amateur sixth-tier side Pays de Cassel are getting ready for the most anticipated game in the Nord outfit’s five-year long history. On Monday night, the team will host Paris Saint-Germain for a Coupe de France last 32 tie at Lens’ Stade Bollaert-Delelis, in a true David versus Goliath showdown. The game was moved to Monday night at PSG’s request, with Christophe Galtier’s men due to play a friendly in Saudi Arabia on Thursday against a squad that will include players from Cristiano Ronaldo’s new team, Al-Nassr.

Pays de Cassel saw off another northern side in fourth-tier Wasquehal, on penalties, to earn their spot in the last 32 stage. The eventual winners knew they would face PSG as the game was postponed following a mass brawl during Wasquehal’s last cup game.

Speaking to Le Parisien, Pays de Cassel president Jean-Jacques Vaesken revealed that his players “cried tears of joy” when knowing they would go toe-to-toe with PSG. “It’s crazy, unimaginable”, told Vaesken. “We’ll try to hold the fort before half-time or to score a goal. I’d be amazed, that would be magnificent.” Even if Christophe Galtier may not risk getting his star players involved, Pays de Cassel president promises a feast of football and hopes his players won’t concede “ten goals“.
