Shark seen in shallow waters off Long Island
Long Island authorities might need a bigger boat.
And local water-goers should think twice about beating the heat in the waters off the Hamptons, where a shark was spotted on Saturday morning, police announced.
Someone at the Shinnecock Yacht Club discovered the 10- to 12-foot fish shortly after 9 a.m. in the shallow waters of the Penniman Creek in Quogue, a village in Southhampton, local police officials said.
The species was not immediately specified.
Temperatures in Quogue reached 92 degrees, with a heat index of 105 degrees Fahrenheit shortly before 2 p.m. according to the National Weather Service.

Cops were monitoring the shark from the water, while also keeping an aerial view using a drone, before losing track of its wherabouts, Quogue Police Lt. Daniel Hartman said.
“They essentially lost sign of it, and we don’t know where it is now,” Hartman said.
Authorities urged water-goers — swimmers, paddle-boarders and boaters alike — to be careful and keep aware of their surroundings, as the temperatures in the northeast continue to rise on one of the hottest days of the year.
“We’re just telling people to essentially be aware that there is a shark in the area and to keep the distance if they do see it.”
