SAYVILLE, NY — A rollover crash involving a single vehicle sent an SUV into the woods on Sunrise Highway on Friday, according to Suffolk County police.
A 2016 Jeep Patriot veered off the road and down an embankment on Eastbound Sunrise Service Road near Johnson Avenue on August 23 around 5 a.m., police said.
The vehicle struck a tree and the driver fled the scene, police said.

The Sayville Fire Department was called to the scene and Chief Reutter, along with Engine 2, Engine 5, Fire Police 7 and Ladder 9 responded, fire department officials said.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the Jeep resting upside down on a hill between the service road and the express portion of Sunrise Highway, officials said.

After searching the vehicle and finding no victims, crews used flashlights and a thermal imaging camera to search through the thick brush for anyone who may have been ejected.
After no victims were located, firefighters decided to lift the vehicle off the ground with airbags to ensure that no victims were trapped underneath it, officials said. Because the position of the vehicle increased the possibility that it might slide down the hill when lifted, firefighters worked with Suffolk County Police Department emergency service officers who chained the SUV to the guardrail before they lifted it and confirmed that no victims were trapped underneath.
An SCPD canine unit also responded and assisted in searching for victims.
With no victims located and operations complete, all units returned and were back in quarters by 6 a.m., officials said.
