Sandy Alderson spent eight years with the Mets. He only needed seven words to sum up his time working for the Wilpons.
“I appreciate the opportunity they gave me,” Alderson said in an interview with the New York Times.
Alderson, who stepped down as general manager last summer following a recurrence of his cancer and two consecutive losing seasons, had nothing else to say about his former bosses. The 71-year-old also declined to discuss whether the decision was solely his, or whether he was pushed out, along with any current issues facing his former team.
When his contract with the Mets ended in October, former protege Billy Beane called Alderson to bring him back to Oakland, where the former general manager spent nearly two decades and helped construct a roster that won three straight pennants, along with the 1989 World Series.
Alderson is now cancer-free and working as an adviser for the A’s.
