Republicans Link To Porn Site Instead Of Maryland GOP
ANNAPOLIS, MD — A change in Twitter handles for the Maryland Republican Party wasn’t relayed to the Republican National Committee, which resulted in the national party sending GOP voters to a porn site’s Twitter account. The change in the state’s Twitter accounts happened months ago, but it wasn’t noted on the national GOP site until media reports surfaced Tuesday.
Instead of directing voters to Maryland state party officials and events via the correct Twitter account — @MDGOP — GOP faithful were getting an eyeful at the racy account named Sexy Car Babes, which has taken over the Maryland Republican Party’s old account name, @MDREPS.
The Capital Gazette first reported on the mixup Monday. When Annapolis Patch checked the links about 2:45 p.m., the fix had been made to the Republican National Committee’s website.
Maryland’s GOP party changed the name of its Twitter feed but didn’t tell the national group, the newspaper reports, and the former GOP Twitter account has been sharing porn links since Jan. 25. A request to freeze the state party’s old Twitter handle was made to the social media company, but it apparently didn’t take effect, Patrick O’Keefe, Maryland Republican Party executive director, said.
“Not notifying the RNC back in February was just an oversight,” O’Keefe told The Hill.
And the Maryland state party chairman dismissed the reach of Twitter and said most Americans are on Facebook.
Dirk Haire said he wasn’t concerned about the mixup. “Like virtually all Americans, I don’t go on Twitter,” Haire said, adding that Twitter was for members of the media and athletes. “We use Facebook much more than Twitter.”
