‘Rambo: Last Blood’ trailer: Is Stallone’s iconic action hero dying?

Sure, the new trailer for “Rambo: Last Blood” starts with Sylvester Stallone in a rocking chair — but the 72-year-old is not done battling bad guys just yet.

A moody teaser for the fifth installment in the “Rambo” franchise dropped Thursday, continuing the story of Vietnam vet John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone). This time out, Rambo is heading south of the border — to take on a wicked Mexican cartel and rescue a friend’s kidnapped daughter.

“I’ve lived in a world of death,” Stallone says as Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ genre-bashing cult hit “Old Town Road” soundtracks aerial shots of a rural ranch. “I’ve watched people I’ve loved die. Some fast with a bullet. Some, not enough left to bury.”

And then: horses, Stallone looking in a mirror, cut to darkness, beat drops. Cut to Mexico with lots of guns and cars exploding. Next up: Stallone killing people — both directly and via booby traps. His face caked in blood. There’s a lot of whistling.

“All these years I’ve kept my secrets — but the time has come to face my past,” Rambo ominously announces. “… Death is coming.”

With all this talk of mortality, one can’t help but ask: Could this film — scripted by Stallone and directed by Adrian Grunberg — really be the last in the franchise? The new trailer has already racked up over 237,000 YouTube views as of this writing, with many viewers pondering the title character’s fate in the comments.

The original John Rambo flick, 1982’s “First Blood,” was one of the first mainstream films to feature a lead character grappling with PTSD after tours of duty Vietnam.

“Rambo: Last Blood” hits theaters nationwide Sept. 20.

It has yet to be announced if Stallone’s newly rediscovered turtle buddies — Cuff and Link from the original “Rocky” — will score cameos in his latest flick, but it’s a semi-sure bet that the star will rock a flannel shirt and jeans at the premiere.
