PITTSBURGH, PA — This work of art would make an extremely large sandwich.
Just in time for the holiday, Mancini’s Bakery in McKees Rocks has unveiled a mind-boggling homage to Charlie Brown, Snoopy and other Peanuts characters in their classic Christmas special: a “Snoopy and the Bread Baron” bread sculpture.
Yeast artist and Mancini’s owner Nick Mancini Hartner’s creation is approximately eight feet wide, four feet tall and weighs about 250 pounds.

The concept for the unique artwork formed gradually. First, Hartner passed the Snoopy doghouse Downtown during a detour. A week later, he spotted a neighbor wearing a Snoopy sweater. Finally, someone suggested a “Snoopy and the Bread Baron sculpture on Mancini’s social media page.
“I’ve always loved A Charlie Brown Christmas. It’s the movie I watched as a child, and this year, I shared it with my daughter,” Hartner said. “When something as timeless as that continues to resonate across generations, it’s clear that it’s something truly special, something everyone can connect with.”

Hartner spent three hours to form the sculpture. Once it was shaped, it spent nearly two hours baking in Mancini’s large deck oven. Then the hard part of the project began.
The labor of love took a total of three hours to form, and once shaped, the sculpture spent 1 hour and 40 minutes baking in the bakery’s large deck oven in McKees Rocks. Once it cooled and dried, the real work started.
“Painting it took longer than making and baking it,” said Hartner, who creates a bread sculpture annually. “It’s been a challenge every year to add complexity to the bread art, so that it’s a fresh experience for everyone to enjoy. This year, I think we’ve really captured something unique, fun and heartwarming.”
“Snoopy and the Bread Baron” will be on display at the McKees Rocks location through the holiday season.
