Pat Shurmur will have his eyes glued to one college quarterback

Pat Shurmur will be watching one collegiate quarterback very closely this week, but not as a potential replacement next season for Eli Manning.

Kyle Shurmur, the son of the Giants’ head coach, will play his final college game Thursday night in Houston, where his Vanderbilt team will face Baylor in the Texas Bowl.

“I’m looking forward to watching my boy in his last college game,” Pat Shurmur said before practice. “The game starts late enough, it’ll be 9 o’clock, [my] work will be done, so I’ll be able to just sit home and watch it. I don’t predict, but it’ll be fun.”

Shurmur’s wife and daughters already are in Houston for the game, but the Big Blue coach will not be there with the Giants (5-10) preparing for their season finale Sunday against Dallas.

Kyle Shurmur has passed for 2,844 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior this season for Vandy (6-6), breaking Jay Cutler’s career record at the SEC school with 63 career TD tosses while needing 120 passing yards Thursday night to break Cutler’s mark in that category.

Kyle Shurmur will participate in the NFLPA’s Collegiate Bowl in January and should be invited to the NFL scouting combine in February.

“He’s made really good decisions,” Pat Shurmur said. “He’s graduating, he’ll graduate in three and a half years. He’s been able to play quarterback in the SEC, help his team win. I’m proud of what he’s done, certainly, and it’ll be fun to watch him.”
