Pat Shurmur: Odell Beckham’s injury has been ‘lingering’

LANDOVER, Md. — Saquon Barkley said he believed “something happened’’ to Odell Beckham Jr. during Friday’s practice that led to the star receiver not making the trip and missing Sunday’s 40-16 rout of the Redskins at FedEx Field. Beckham was left home with a bruised quad muscle.

Coach Pat Shurmur said Beckham missing his first game this season came as a surprise after Beckham practiced most of the week.

“This has been a thing that has been lingering,’’ Shurmur said. “He was further evaluated on Friday and came in Saturday and it was pretty evident that he couldn’t play.’’

Moving forward, Shurmur did not speculate how much time Beckham will miss.

“I don’t know,’’ he said. “I am not worried about it right now. I think he will do what he can to come back next week.’’

Eli Manning, on not playing in the fourth quarter, as rookie Kyle Lauletta made his NFL debut: “It’s good to get Kyle in there and get him some action. It’s good to sit back and get a little rest and start getting ready for next week.’’

For the second consecutive week, the Giants’ defense reached the end zone and scored before their offensive teammates. The Redskins were pinned back on their 1-yard line when Kareem Martin got a hand on a Mark Sanchez pass intended for Michael Floyd. The slight deflection sent the ball directly to S Curtis Riley, who caught it in front of teammate Michael Thomas and then took a casual 9-yard stroll into the end zone to help make it 7-0.

Redskins CB Josh Norman, on what the Giants did to them: “We were taken to the back of the barn, kind of like your grandmother does with one of those big thick paddles and we got it put to our backside pretty good. That’s what happened.’’

The last time the Giants scored 40 or more points in a game? Nov. 1, 2015, when they lost 52-49 to the Saints in New Orleans.

After his one start, Sanchez will start no more. Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Josh Johnson — who was signed less than a week ago — will start at quarterback for the next game, against the Jaguars.

“Yes, we’ll get Josh ready to go,’’ Gruden said.

TE Jordan Reed, perhaps the Redskins’ top offensive weapon, hurt his foot six minutes into the game blocking for Adrian Peterson, left the game and never returned. … Trailing 40-16, Redskins WR Josh Doctson had a catch-and-run for 31 yards to the Giants 3-yard line and then was called for a taunting penalty, a loss of 15 yards. Brilliant. On the next play, Johnson was intercepted at the goal line by Thomas, who started at strong safety in place of Landon Collins — on season-ending injured reserve.

Hall of Famer and former Knicks great Patrick Ewing attended the game and was an honorary captain. Ewing is the head coach at his alma mater, Georgetown.
