Nick Kyrgios should learn from Rafael Nadal, says John McEnroe

In an interview, the Channel 9 commentator commented on attitude. The Australian player lost to Milos Raonic in Melbourne suffering a knee injury and showing not to have made mental improvements yet. Its sad for them and its also sad for us.

I like Nick a lot, said McEnroe, who was Team Worlds captain in the 2017 and 2018 Laver Cups working with Kyrgios. I think hes a great kid and hes one of the most talented guys Ive seen in 10 years.

He gets defensive [but] some of this criticism is deserved. In other ways, he does a lot of good things. But you hate to see anyone whether its Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic any player go on that court and not give that 100 per cent.

You feel like youre owed. Theyre well paid, youre out there with an opportunity to do something really big, so you gravitate I do. I gravitate towards those guys that give that effort, the De Minaurs of the world.

The guy thats coaching him, whats his name? Lleyton Hewitt. He was pretty good at the effort. The Michael Changs – hes helped [Kei] Nishikori I think become a better player. To me, [Jimmy] Connors I looked at him and said, I never saw a guy try harder than this guy.

I tried to look at myself; Do you try as hard as Jimmy Connors? And most of the time it was no. So I think he helped me become better and Nadal would be the perfect one for any player to look at. Ive never seen a guy try as consistently hard and thats part of why many reasons why hes an amazing champion.
