In a column for the Players Voice Australia, the world No. 51 revealed what has been making and so great over the years. The 23-year-old said the Spaniard and the Swiss make a difference in the key moments.
It really comes down not to how many points you win but which points you win, said Kyrgios. As Im getting older, Im understanding that more. Legends like Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal are experts at that and have been showing their class on the big points and big moments on the biggest stages forever.
Its something Im looking to emulate. Ive lost points at times that havent really meant much but I have let that bother me and affect me on the most important points which, to be honest, drives me nuts.
Thats when my emotions have got the better of me. I want to change that, but its not an easy overnight fix. Its something I am still dealing with and learning how to do better. Kyrgios also commented on the criticism he gets: Over the years I have been accused of not caring.
Thats not the case. I know Im doing something not many people have the chance to do. But I am also aware that tennis is not the only thing in the world and that the universe does not revolve around how I play or whether I win or lose.
Have I managed to articulate that as best as I could? No. Does that mean that I dont care or give a shit? No. I just have a bit more perspective on life than some people my age and in my position. Sometimes I feel burdened by that and wonder why all the fuss over a little yellow ball.
Of course, I want to win. Ive given my whole life to tennis to this point. But sometimes its not possible, or its not your day, or the opponent is just better. Its life. No matter who you are, somewhere, somehow there is someone coming along or training to be better than you.
Thats evolution. ALSO READ: Rafael Nadal: Worse players than David Ferrer won a Grand Slam title
