Newark Airport halts all flights after airplane skids off runway

All flights were halted temporarily in and out of Newark Liberty Airport Saturday afternoon when a plane apparently skidded off a runway.

“Due to an airport emergency there are currently no arrivals nor departures from Newark Airport. Please check with your carrier before coming to the airport,” according to the airport’s Twitter feed.

United Airlines Flight 627, which was coming in from Denver, landed on a runway at the airport around 1 p.m., but “then skidded off the left side of the pavement,” a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson told the Post.

“The left main landing gear is stuck in a grassy area,” the spokesperson added.

A United Airlines spokesman said 166 were on board the flight from Denver when the plane “experienced multiple flat tires upon landing in Newark.”

No injuries were immediately reported, authorities said.

“For those on the flight, we arranged transport for passengers from the aircraft to the airport terminal and paramedics were on site as a precaution,” wrote spokesman Robert Einhorn said an emailed statement. “We’re in close touch with the FAA and airport authorities and are working expeditiously to safely remove the disabled aircraft so that operations at the airport can return to normal.”

Flights resumed shortly before 3 p.m., though a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman said passengers should expect further delays.

PAPD’s Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter Unit, Emergency Services Unit and patrol units were evacuating passengers, who were being transported to the terminal by bus, officials said.

The FAA will investigate the incident.
