New Behavioral Health Crisis Center Coming To Montgomery County

NORRISTOWN, PA — Montgomery County plans to invest in a new behavioral health crisis center, an acknowledgement of the growing need in the county for specialized, transitional care and following the recent decision to nix a similar proposal embroiled in controversy at Eagleville Hospital.

The precise cost of the investment and location of the project are not yet known. Officials will announce more details during a news briefing next Monday. A spokesperson for the project told Patch that the decision on the location will be determined soon.

“A site has not yet been selected, but the plan is to select a site that will be centrally located to maximize ease of access,” the spokesperson said.

The goal of the site will be divert individuals with mental health or substance abuse issues from jail to a place where they can receive treatment.

“The center will provide essential crisis intervention services, offering immediate support and a safe place for people in mental health crises,” the county said in announcing the site. “This initiative is part of the county’s broader strategy to create a criminal justice system that offers individuals pathways to recovery.”

The Eagleville Hospital project, proposed and then swiftly axed in the spring, was similar, and could serve an overlapping population, but has a notably different focus. While that project would have been run by a nonprofit, and described itself as temporary housing for the homeless, this new project is a county-run “emergency behavioral mental health crisis center.”

The still to be named location could be key, as the proposal to house the other project on the grounds of Eagleville Hospital brought sharp backlash from locals, and was ultimately rejected by the Lower Providence Board of Supervisors.

The news briefing to announce details on the center will be held on Monday, July 22 at 11 a.m. on the Montgomery County Courthouse steps in Norristown. Montgomery County commissioners and health leaders will speak during the event.
