New Japan Pro Wrestling has announced that Hirooki Goto will defend the NEVER Openweight Championship against Kota Ibushi at the World Tag League Finals on Dec. 9th. Goto had been challenging Ibushi to the match for sometime, with Ibushi rebuffing the champion at every turn. On Nov. 18th, Goto finally told Ibushi that he’d given up on the match with Ibushi, which led to The Golden Star to change his mind.
Goto is currently in his 4th reign with the NEVER Openweight Championship, having won the belt at Power Struggle on Nov. 3rd. The match with Ibushi will mark Goto’s first defense of the new reign. Ibushi holds a singles victory over Goto, defeating him on Aug. 1st at the 28th G1 Climax.
