Pierre Moscovici, the EU economics commissioner, told Greece not to “play games” with the International Monetary Fund, one of the country’s international creditors.

“2015 was difficult enough, let’s make 2016 a year of solutions,” Moscovici said in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung published Thursday.

Moscovici insisted that the IMF plays a role in the three-year, €86 billion rescue package for Greece. He added that “the Commission is going to try to come to an agreement with the Fund.”

“For many [EU] member countries, not only Germany, the participation of the IMF is an absolute necessity,” he said.

The IMF, which teamed up with the European Commission and the European Central Bank in the previous two rescue packages, is still to decide whether to be involved in the third rescue package.

Alexis Tsipras, Greece’s Prime Minister, has said in December that funds from the IMF are not necessary, because the institution’s position was “unconstructive.”
