Montco Proposes More Funding For Norristown Hydroelectric Dam

NORRISTOWN, PA — Montgomery County is prioritizing the proposed hydroelectric dam in Norristown in their newly proposed budget for 2025, according to documents released with the proposal this week.

The capital improvement proposal for 2025 includes $450,000 earmarked for the Norristown Dam, as the county continues to explore the possibility of harnessing hydroelectric power. That marks more than double the $200,000 investment the county put into planning for the future of the dam in 2024.

The budget also proposes $400,000 in new funding for 2026.

“With this dam, the County would be able to run its internal operations in Norristown all internal operations with hydroelectricity, making Montgomery County more independently sustainable,” a spokesperson for the county said. “This development would impact the region as a whole, highlighting the County’s ongoing efforts as a member of the Sustainable Energy Partnership Alliance.”

The project area would run along the Schuylkill River from the dam, located between the DeKalb Street and Markley Street bridges, several miles west down the river.

The county said they are still working to obtain a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission exemption, which is required to move forward with the project.

If successful, the dam could potentially transform the energy landscape in the region and help the county meet its goal of transitioning to renewable energy in the coming decades.

The county has already taken the first step in gaining federal approval by filing the necessary documentation — called an “Initial Consultation Document” — but a timeline for when that will be processed is not clear.
