Minnesota Wrestling: Michigan and Michigan State Duals

Minnesota opened its Big Ten season in style, sweeping its way through Michigan’s lower peninsula with a 20-17 win Friday night against Michigan State and then knocking off No. 10 Michigan on Sunday, 22-18.

The Gophers took six of 10 bouts from Michigan State, including a critical run of three straight wins to the end of the dual, a streak that scored 11 unanswered points to close out the Spartans.

Minnesota again won six of 10 on Sunday afternoon, including a five-match winning streak late in the dual that flipped an early deficit into an insurmountable lead with one contest left in the matinee.

The Gophers competing in the four heaviest weight classes posted perfect 2-0 records over the weekend: No. 16 Nick Wanzek, Bobby Steveson, No. 2 Brett Pfarr and No. 6 Michael Kroells. Wanzek, Steveson, and Kroells all scored bonus points in one of their wins, while Pfarr earned major decisions in both duals. No. 12 Jake Short also won both of his 157-pound matches.
