Mickey Callaway comes clean: ‘It’s gonna take a miracle’

Mickey Callaway admitted what everyone else already seemed to know on Friday.

“We’re in a tough spot. It’s gonna take a miracle,” The Mets GM told WFAN’s Mike Francesa. ‘I’ve seen miracles before … We’re down in the win-loss column. That’s the bottom line.

The Mets sit in fourth in the NL East at 37-45, 11 games behind the first-place Braves, who they begin a three-game set with Friday night at Citi Field.

Callaway’s words are especially fitting, given that the franchise is celebrating the anniversary of the Miracle Mets, the 1969 squad that seemed destined for the basement, but turned it around to win the World Series.

As apt as is it, Callaway’s club will need to work out a lot of kinks in short order to salvage its season, though the Mets making it to .500  probably would be enough to be considered a miracle.

“We understand we’re in a very, very, very tough situation,” Callaway said. “It may take a miracle to get out of it. That’s happened before in Mets land. They’re celebrating the [50]-year anniversary of it , and we’re hoping that that can happen. We’re optimistic we can get this thing going.”
