Mexico sends 70 migrants seeking asylum in US back home
A Mexican official said Tuesday about 70 Central American migrants who’d been returned to Ciudad Juarez from the US to await the outcome of their asylum claims were being bused back to their home countries.
The official with the Foreign Relations Department said the bus left Juarez, just over the border from El Paso, Texas, on Tuesday morning.
All the people are said to have volunteered, and all are from El Salvador, Guatemala or Honduras.
The official isn’t sure what impact their decisions might have on their asylum claims in the States.
The person adds that similar busings are expected soon in Tijuana and Mexicali, two other cities that have been taking in returnees from the US under the program.
The number of illegal immigrants apprehended at the southern border has surged since President Trump took office despite his hardline policies.
In May, more than 130,000 were apprehended, compared to fewer than 100,000 the month before and just over 50,000 in October, according to Customs and Border Protection data.
Trump predicted Monday that the June numbers, to be released any day, would show a 25% decline.
He credited Mexico with moving thousands of National Guard troops to both its southern and northern borders to deter the asylum seekers, many of them families seeking a new life in the US.
