Matt Rhule could be on Jets’ interview docket during Texas trip

The Jets may have a busy weekend in Texas.

Team brass is heading there to interview Cowboys defensive backs coach Kris Richard on Sunday, but may have another interview target in mind, too.

ESPN reported Friday the Jets have expressed interest in Baylor coach Matt Rhule, though it was unknown if an interview has been scheduled. It makes sense the Jets could talk to him while in Texas to see Richard.

Rhule is a widely respected coach who had success at Temple before leaving for Baylor prior to the 2017 season.

The 43-year-old grew up in New York City before moving to State College, Pa., in his teens. Baylor went 7-6 this season after going 1-11 in 2017. Rhule took over a program that was down after a sexual assault scandal.

Prior to Baylor, he was the head coach at Temple for four seasons. He won 10 games in each of his final two years there, the first time in program history the Owls accomplished that feat.

Rhule spent one season on Tom Coughlin’s staff with the Giants in 2012 as assistant offensive line coach. He has experience as an offensive coordinator with Temple from 2008-11. He also served as quarterbacks coach from 2007-10, so he has experience in developing quarterbacks, a priority for the Jets.
