Mark Sanchez has a better butt fumble — but that’s about it

Mark Sanchez’s first snap in an NFL game since Jan. 1, 2017, couldn’t have gone much better. But after watching Adrian Peterson sprint 90 yards for a touchdown after taking a handoff from him, Sanchez struggled mightily as he replaced an injured Colt McCoy in the Redskins’ 28-13 loss to the Eagles on Monday night in Philadelphia.

“I was at home with my son who just turned 2, who better be in bed, just praying for this opportunity,” Sanchez said of returning to the NFL.

Now Sanchez, signed off his sofa by Washington two weeks ago after Alex Smith was lost for the season with a broken leg, could get his first start since 2015 on Sunday when the Redskins play host to the Giants.

McCoy fractured the fibula in his right leg in the second quarter, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said.

Sanchez actually engineered a drive for a field goal late in the first half to pull the Redskins (6-6) within 14-13, but he couldn’t get the offense moving in the second half. The former Jets quarterback finished 13-for-21 for 100 yards and an interception.

“We have to get a plan ready for Mark moving forward,” Gruden said. “We’ve got to play great football around him, which we didn’t do tonight.”

There’s no guarantee Sanchez — the only quarterback remaining on the Redskins roster — will remain the starter. The Redskins worked out E.J. Manuel, T.J. Yates, Kellen Clemens and Josh Johnson after Smith was injured, and quality veteran QBs are in low supply.

Sanchez, whose lasting image from his time with the Jets will forever be “The Butt Fumble,” lost a fumble against the Eagles and actually saved the ball by pressing it against his rear end.

Meanwhile, Carson Wentz tossed two touchdown passes, Darren Sproles ran for a score and the Eagles (6-6) won consecutive games for the first time since Nick Foles led them to a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots.
