Marcus Stroman’s antics have irked another individual, albeit this time it came from the broadcasting booth.
NESN commentator Dennis Eckersley took issue with the 28-year-old pitcher’s celebration after striking out Eduardo Nunez to end the sixth inning of the Blue Jays’ 6-1 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday.
Stroman, whose celebrations have previously rubbed some the wrong way, let out a triumphant roar and paused to stare into the Red Sox dugout as he walked to his own dugout, an act the 64-year-old color commentator claimed was “tired.”
The strikeout ended up being the right-hander’s last batter of the day, his sixth strikeout in six scoreless innings. After the game, Stroman got wind of Eckersley’s comments and fired back.
“His comments are always trash,” Stroman tweeted after the game.
Stroman then highlighted Eckersley’s own over-the-top celebrations during his time as a relief pitcher, calling him a “clown” and a “hypocrite.”

Eckersley responded to Stroman’s displeasure over the “tired” comment, telling WEEI, “I get it, where he’s coming from. There was a lot of people who thought I was tired too.”
Stroman has recorded a 3.04 ERA in 100 2/3 innings pitched this season and has been linked with various trade rumors, but has been one of the more demonstrative pitchers in the league throughout his career.
“I’m an emotional guy,” Stroman told reporters in 2017. “I’m going to continue to be myself regardless of who doesn’t like it, who likes it. I’m going to be myself regardless here on out. I’m emotional. That’s how I pitch. That’s what I pride myself on. That’s what allows me to be my best out there and that’s how it’s going to be day in and day out. So if you don’t like it, it’s OK.”
This is not the first time Eckersley’s comments have bothered a player on the field. In 2017, Red Sox pitcher David Price reportedly confronted Eckersley for his “yuck” comment when regarding Eduardo Rodriguez.
