Australian tennis star Bernard Tomic ended on the winning side on the opening day of the Priceline Pharmacy Kooyong Classic as he beat American Jack Sock. The Australian lost a tight set but came from a set down to beat 2017 Paris Masters champion Sock 5-7 6-4 10-6.
The turning point of the match came in the 10th game od the second set when Socks serve on a set point was called an ace — but the American overturned it himself as he thought the serve was out. Tomic, ranked at No.
85 in the world, then hit a winner on the set point to clinch a decider. The home-favorite Australian then had no problems winning the match tie-break to complete his comeback. It was the first match of the new season for both Tomic and Sock.
Tomic later returned to the court to play mixed doubles with his sister Sara Tomic. In a match where only one was played, the Tomics beat another brother sister duo — John Peers and Sally Peers — 6-4. Another Australian wasnt that lucky on Tuesday as Jason Kubler fell just short of clinching a win.
The 25-year-old was edged out by former world No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic 6-4 3-6 12-10. Four-time ATP champion Tipsarevic was playing his first match since US Open 2017. Tipsarevics fellow compatriot Filip Krajinovic also got the job done on the opening day of Kooyong.
Dzumhur, a former world No. 23, didnt have a memorable Kooyong debut. 2017 Paris Masters runner-up Krajinovic saw off three-time ATP champion Damir Dzumhur 6-3 6-2. In the womens event, a battle between two promising players ended on an unfortunate way as highly-talented American Amanda Anisimova couldnt finish the match.
