Kareem Hunt breaks silence with apologies and vague story
Kareem Hunt contacted ESPN to request an interview to explain his side of the brutal video that surfaced Friday, which shows him attacking a woman.
The world still does not really know his side.
Hunt spoke on “Sunday NFL Countdown,” apologizing to the woman he shoved and kicked and to the Chiefs, who promptly cut the star running back following the video’s publication. He did not go into detail about what exactly led to his explosion in a Cleveland hotel in February.
“I just want to let the world know how sorry I am for my actions,” Hunt said in his first public comments after TMZ released the video. “It’s been a tough time for me and I’m extremely embarrassed about that video.”
Asked what transpired before his attack, he said, “It doesn’t really matter what happened.
“Some things that were said and did that I did not like,” added the 23-year-old. “That’s not an excuse. That person in that video did not deserve that. I didn’t mean to hurt anybody or anything like that. It’s really tough because I feel like I let a lot of people down.”
Throughout the interview, Hunt insisted, “I’m not that type of person.” He said he did not have a prior relationship with the woman in the video, whom he has not spoken to since. Yet, he wants her to know that, “I am sorry for my actions that night.”
The Chiefs reportedly did not cut him because of the actions on the video, but rather because he lied to the team about that night. When video proved he was not telling the truth, he was gone.
“The Chiefs were right and I didn’t tell them everything,” said Hunt, who added that the NFL never interviewed him about the incident. “My actions caused this and I really wish I could apologize to them.”
Hunt acknowledged he, like Ray Rice before him, could be done with the NFL. He said he intends to get anger-management treatment and hopes for another chance.
“I hope so,” he said about the possibility of another team signing him. “I’ve worked for this my whole entire life. I’ve gave everything and sacrificed so much for this. … If I get another shot at this, the team won’t regret it.”
