A man was convicted of murdering a Binghamton University nursing student by a Nicaraguan court on Friday.
Orlando Tercero, 23, now faces up to 30 years in prison for strangling Haley Anderson, a Long Island native, to death inside his off campus apartment in March 2018.
Some trial witnesses, who had to testify via video link, said that the two students were romantically involved, but that Tercero wanted a more serious relationship.
Tercero, a dual US-Nicaraguan citizen, fled to the Central American country a day after the murder.
He was captured soon after by Nicaraguan authorities and charged with second-degree murder.
Authorities had hoped to extradite Tercero back the states, but Nicaragua’s laws forbid extradition of its citizens.
Gordon Anderson, Haley’s father, told The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin that the verdict has brought him some closure.
“I mean it’s not over, and there will always be an emptiness that’s there,” he told the paper.
“But it was nice to see that Nicaragua did a really professional, bang up job to get the job done.”
Tercero is expected to be sentenced in the coming days.
