Jets report card: Effort unable to mask coaching deficiencies

Grades from the Jets’ 27-13 loss the Patriots on Sunday.

Offense

The Jets moved the ball better than they have in weeks, rolling up 338 yards, but they only reached the end zone once. QB Josh McCown (26-of-45, 276 yards, one TD, one INT, 73.9 rating) fought valiantly but could not will his team to a win. The mystery is why the Jets did not run the ball more. Isaiah Crowell (six rushes, 30 yards) averaged 5 yards per carry but only carried the ball three times in each half. The Jets had 12 designed runs and 50 designed passes.

Grade: C

Defense

The Jets contained the Patriots for a little while, so I won’t give them an F. But New England rolled up 498 total yards and had nine plays of more than 20 yards. That’s not good. QB Tom Brady (20-of-31, 283 yards, two TDs, 115.4 rating) was not at his best, but he still picked apart the Jets. RB Sony Michel (21 rushes, 133 yards, one TD) found gaping holes in the Jets defense.

Grade: D

Special Teams

Kicker Jason Myers continued his outstanding season, kicking two more field goals, including a 55-yarder. He became the first player in NFL history to kick five field goals of 55 yards or more. Myers also kept the ball away from dangerous returner Cordarrelle Patterson, kicking three touchbacks. There were not many notable special-teams plays in this game. Andre Roberts had a 35-yard kickoff return, continuing his strong season, but the Jets did not make much of a special-teams impact.

Grade: B

Coaching

Give Todd Bowles credit for keeping his team together. The Jets showed some fight Sunday. But this was not a well-coached team again. Offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates looks lost on the job. How can you call 50 passes to just 12 runs? On defense, the Jets collapsed in a big moment again, allowing a four-play touchdown drive that put the Patriots ahead for good.
