Jets report card: Defensive disasters don’t get worse than this

Grades from the Jets’ 44-38 loss to the Packers on Sunday:

Offense

The Jets offense did everything right except shut the door in the fourth quarter. Still, it’s hard to put too much blame on this group, which scored 31 points. QB Sam Darnold (24-of-35, 341 yards, 3 TDs, 128.4 rating) keeps getting better and played his best game of the year. WR Robby Anderson (9 catches, 140 yards, 1 TD) continued his hot play and RB Elijah McGuire scored a rushing and a receiving touchdown.

Grade: A-

Defense

This group has not lived up to its preseason hype when there was hope they could carry this team. The unit got torched for 540 yards and collapsed in the fourth quarter to blow a 15-point lead. Aaron Rodgers (37-of-55, 442 yards, 2 passing TDs, 2 rushing TDs) picked the Jets apart in the fourth quarter and overtime. RB Jamaal Williams (15 rushes, 95 yards, 2 TDs) found huge holes to run through. WR Davante Adams (11 catches, 71 yards, 1 TD) was wide open for most of the day. Jets defensive backs continue to commit terrible penalties at the worst times.

Special teams

KR Andre Roberts nearly was the MVP of this game. He returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in the first half and then his 51-yard return in the fourth quarter set up the game-tying field goal. The Jets also forced a fumble on a kickoff in the third quarter. Jason Myers missed a 45-yard field goal early in the game but made the 33-yarder to send the game into overtime.

Coaching

This was the best game of the season for offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates. He had a good feel for what would work against the Packers defense and dialed up some great calls. Todd Bowles takes a hit for 16 penalties committed by the Jets, even if he felt some were bad calls. The Jets also let Davante Adams beat them. They should have had a better plan for him.
