Itasca claims one champion and a third-place finish at Dragon Open

Corey Schmidt, a freshman for the Vikings, took the championship in the 197-pound white division this weekend. Schmidt charted his first win over Andrew Helfrich of Minot State 16-2 advancing him into the semifinals where he defeated Erik Grena of Northland. Schmidt continued his win streak finishing in the finals with a 7-2 decision over Gerardo Jaime of University of Mary.

Sam Truen went 3-1 unattached while competing at 184 pounds. Truen lost an 11-5 decision in the first round to runner-up Mitchell Kotschevar of Moorhead. In his second match Truen faced off with DIII #8 Luke Dodd of St. Johns securing a fall at 6:03. Truen then went on to beat Cole Witzig of North Dakota State in a tight 4-3 decision advancing him to the third-place match. He finished the night with a 5-1 decision over Matt Hernandez of Jamestown.

Tanner Reetz went 2-2 on the day winning his first round by technical fall over Parker Huss of Rochester. Reetz fell to Sawyer Degen North Dakota State in a 5:36 fall. Reetz gained a 1:52 fall over Hser Moo Pwae of Minnesota West. Reetz was eliminated after being defeated by Aaron Sistrunk in a 9-2 decision.

Ethan Kiehm finished in 6th in the 149 white division with a 1-3 record on the day. Ethan gained his solo victory with a 6-2 decision over Moorhead’s Riley Byklum.
