French tennis star Gael Monfils is looking forward to making his debut at the Sofia Open this coming February. The Sofia event has been a part of the ATP calendar since 2016. Monfils had a chat with three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka — who had nothing but good to say to the Frenchman about the Sofia event.
Wawrinka, 33, debuted in Sofia this past season but was clearly far away from his best form after returning from the surgery. The Swiss made the semifinal in Sofia in his debut appearance before he lost to eventual champion Mirza Basic.
The Sofia event has managed to gather a notable player field for 2019 as it will be a mixture of youth and experience. Former world No. 6 Monfils, former world No. 3 Wawrinka, defending champion Basic, 2009 Australian Open semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco and world No.
24 Roberto Bautista Agut have all been confirmed for Sofia. The Sofia event has done an outstanding job of luring some of the most promising players to its tournament as Paris Masters champion Karen Khachanov, NextGen ATP Finals champion Stefanos Tsitsipas and world No.
16 Daniil Medvedev are also expected to play at the Bulgarian event. Excited for my first time playing the Sofia Open in February 2019. My friend Stan Wawrinka has told me great things about the tournament and I cant wait to see what the city has to offer.
Its going to be a competitive week of super matches with this amazing field of players, Monfils wrote on his Facebook page. The Sofia Open is due to be held from 04-10 February. Also read: Jason Kubler suffers early-season setback as he withdraws from Brisbane
