DEARBORN, MI — Ford Motor Company has recalled more than 550,000 trucks and SUVs because seat backs may not properly restrain people in a crash. The recall covers certain 2018 through 2020 F-150 pickups, 2019 and 2020 Super Duty trucks, 2018 and 2019 Explorer SUVs, and 2019 and 2020 Expedition SUVs, the company said.
All have manual driver or front passenger seat-back recliner mechanisms. Also included are some 2020 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs with rear seats with manual seat-back mechanisms.
“Affected vehicles may be missing the third pawl required for seatback strength,” Ford said in a statement. “A seatback with an improperly assembled recliner mechanism may have reduced strength and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.”
Ford says it doesn’t know of any crashes or injuries resulting from this issue.
Dealers will inspect the seat structure of affected vehicles, Ford said, noting that most vehicles are expected to pass the inspection and not require repair. If a repair is required, the dealer will replace the seat structure. There will be no charge to the customer for these services.
