Fans furious ‘The Office’ is leaving Netflix

It was announced Wednesday that the beloved workplace comedy, reportedly the most popular show to stream on Netflix, is being pulled from the streaming giant in 2021, bound for NBCUniversal (in a whopping $500 million deal), where it originally aired from 2005 to 2013.
Naturally, the millions of people who like to watch the antics of Dwight, Michael, Jim and Pam were not pleased about this news. Here’s what they had to say.
“First they took Vine now they’re taking the office; my mental health can’t handle much more of this,” one fan moaned on Twitter.
“If The Office leaving Netfix, I’m leaving Netflix,” said another.
“The real bad thing about The Office leaving Netflix is the idea of NBC creating their own separate streaming platform. What a dreadful, dreadful future,” said another.
“Everybody thought the world ending soon was a joke.. The Office is getting taken off of Netflix. If you don’t think somethings up now then you’re dumb,” proclaimed one fan.
The Americanized remake of Ricky Gervais‘ popular BBC series — which launched the likes of Steve Carell, Mindy Kaling and John Krasinski — was always popular and critically acclaimed, but it rose to new heights in recent years, thanks to the ubiquity of Netflix and its timeless humor.
It’s also tailor-made for the era of reaction gifs on social media — like “Game of Thrones,” it’s a cultural touchstone. Consider how many times you’ve seen someone respond to a tweet with a gif of Krasinski’s Jim looking into the camera or Carell’s Michael yelling, “It’s happening!”
The show reportedly is bound for NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service. This means if you want to continue comfort-watching, you have to subscribe to yet another platform. One thing is clear, it’s the end of an era for Netflix being the catch-all destination for nearly all your TV needs.
