FALMOUTH, MA – Two police officers responding to a 21-year-old man breaking bottles were shot Friday in a shootout that also wounded the suspect, shutting down an East Falmouth neighborhood and squeezing the breath out of a region that has seen too many officers killed in the line of duty this year.

All three involved were expected to survive, officials said.

“Nothing in police work is routine … no call is routine,” Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne said.

Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said one officer was shot twice – once in the vest and once above the vest. That officer, who was still in the hospital, has been speaking with his family, including his three children. The other officer was grazed in the head by a bullet. He was treated and released from the hospital.

The two officers have been on the force for about five years.

The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Malik Koval. He was shot multiple times and remained hospitalized in Boston.

Police responded to Ashley Drive around 5:25 p.m. to a report of a man breaking bottles. Koval became agitated when police confronted him, got a gun from his house, and fired at the officers, authorities said.

Ashley Drive is in the Seacoast Shores neighborhood of East Falmouth. People in the area were not allowed to return to their homes Friday evening.
