Ex-Packers assistant: The burden of coaching Aaron Rodgers
Mike McCarthy may have coached the Packers for nearly 13 seasons, but as former assistant Winston Moss suggests in passing, Aaron Rodgers ran the show in Green Bay.
Appearing on Fox’s “NFL Kickoff” on Sunday, Moss spoke about Rodgers’ relationship with McCarthy, which came to an abrupt end professionally following the Packers’ 20-17 loss to the Cardinals at home in Week 12.
“It didn’t work out this year,” Moss said, according to Yahoo Sports. “But you go back through the course of when Aaron Rodgers got his shot starting in 2008, they have grown exponentially together. They have created one of the most dynamic duos in the National Football League.”
Rodgers helped lead the Packers to a Super Bowl title in 2010, but the team’s playoff drought now spans two straight seasons. Despite the current state of affairs, Moss believes both parties will survive.
“Aaron Rodgers is going be a Hall of Fame quarterback. Mike McCarthy’s résumé speaks for itself,” he said.
As for the Packers’ next head coach, Moss believes all roads in Green Bay go through Rodgers.
“Aaron Rodgers has been the head coach for the last nine years,” Moss said before adding, “Just joking, just joking.”

This isn’t the first time Moss has taken a not-so-veiled shot at the quarterback. Prior to his termination from the Packers, Moss griped about leadership and accountability on social media.
“Ponder this … what Championship teams have are great leadership! Period! It’s not the offensive guru trend, it’s not the safe trend. Find somebody that is going to hold #12 and everybody in this building to a #LombardiStandard! Period! #losingsucks!” Moss penned.
Moss also appears to be in agreement with team president Mark Murphy, in terms of hiring the next coach.
“They should listen to [Rodgers’] input, but the final decision should rest on who the decision-makers would like to choose to lead this organization moving forward,” Winston said.
Murphy previously stated he would listen to what Rodgers has to say, but that No. 12 would not be “part of the process.”
Moss joined the Packers coaching staff in 2006 and previously served as an assistant head coach to McCarthy.
