Elmhurst Willing To Pay Influencer To Promote Town

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst has $60,000 in the budget to pay a social media influencer to promote the city.

Media outlets such as Patch don’t take payments for news or feature stories and won’t give advertisers special treatment in coverage.

But influencers bill the organizations and communities that they promote.

At a City Council meeting this week, Kassondra Schref, the city’s communications manager, said there is a dollar amount to bring in a social media influencer.

“It’s paid media,” she said. “A large news (organization) came to us this past year and said we want to be in Elmhurst for a day, and it’s going to cost us a lot of money. We didn’t have that budgeted, so that’s the type of thing we’re looking for.”

She called the $60,000 a placeholder in the budget in case an influencer opportunity arises.

Mayor Scott Levin said Elmhurst needs to promote itself because it does not get a lot of news coverage.

“It’s kind of surprising that you see these (people) where they come out and feature us and we’re going to pay for it,” he said.

Alderwoman Emily Bastedo said a lot of people may not realize influencers are being paid by those they’re promoting.

“It looks like some really nice, friendly guy just stumbled into the western suburbs and discovered this cute downtown and these restaurants,” she said. “A lot of the content you’re seeing might actually be something that people have paid for, not just random.”
