Debra Messing is returning to Broadway to light ‘Birthday Candles’

Theatergoers can watch Debra Messing age before their eyes next spring.

In Noah Haidle’s new play, “Birthday Candles,” the star of “Will & Grace” — both past and rebooted — starts off as 17-year-old Ernestine Ashworth, who spends an angsty birthday worrying about her place in the universe.

The birthdays mount up, along with the angst, until she’s 101.

This isn’t Messing’s first Broadway play. Five years ago, the Emmy Award winner won warm reviews as the irritable Irish lass of John Patrick Shanley’s “Outside Mullingar.”

The Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of “Birthday Candles” will kick off its limited run on April 2 at the American Airlines Theater.

The rest of the cast has yet to be announced, but “Will & Grace” fans may be crossing their fingers there’s a part in there for Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes or Megan Mullally.
