Cycle And 2-Wheel Vehicle Ban In Landslide Area Extended
RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council extended a controversial ban on bicycles and other two-wheeled vehicles on Palos Verdes Drive South for an additional 90 days.
Due to safety concerns, the city council decided in July to temporarily prohibit bicycles, motorcycles and other two-wheeled vehicles on Palos Verdes Drive South. The extended ban now includes single-wheel vehicles and continues to prohibit two-wheeled vehicles from traveling along the stretch of road.
Movement in certain areas of Palos Verdes Drive South are moving up to 4 inches per week, the city said, and cracks, bumps and potholes are continuing to form overnight. Due to the hazardous conditions, city officials say it’s still unsafe for cycles and two-wheel vehicles to travel on the road.

Recently, city council members were notified about a person on an electric bicycle in the prohibited area who had been injured.
“Everyone on council received a note and some, actually, relatively gruesome pictures of somebody who admittedly ignored the sign, drove through on an electric bike and took a header,” Mayor David Bradley said.

At the time of the original announcement, the city council was met with disapproval from the local community, who acknowledged the need for additional safety measures along the road but
pointed out that the prohibition was potentially illegal.
The City Council will revisit the cycle and two-wheel vehicle ban in early March to either end or extend the prohibition.
