John Jay professors get hit with sex harassment allegations

#MeToo has hit one of the nation’s top criminal-justice colleges….

The board of the public university system approved spending up to $1.5 million to hire high-powered law firm Covington & Burling to investigate “various claims.”

The move came because of a “complex series of alleged violations of the University’s policy against Sexual Misconduct and other CUNY policies, which involve multiple potential plaintiffs,” according to the hiring resolution approved by the board at its June 24 meeting.

Covington & Burling will represent CUNY “during the pre-litigation, including mediation and investigation, phase” of the claims.

A CUNY spokesman would not comment on which college or colleges were involved in the claims or provide any additional information.

The hiring comes after John Jay College of Criminal Justice has been rocked by allegations that the school and four professors created a “cesspool of sexism, misogyny, sexual harassment and illegal drug use,” according to a lawsuit filed last month by two former students who first raised the allegations a year ago.

The college hired Riley Safer Holmes & Cancila last summer to investigate the claims and, based on the Manhattan firm’s report, said it would fire three of the professors. A fourth professor, an adjunct, was not rehired after the allegations were raised.

The agreement with Covington & Burling stretches for two years, “with an option for additional phases of work.”

Joe Biden just picked Covington & Burling as counsel for his presidential campaign.
