Concord Firefighters Battle Homeless Camp Fire On Old Loudon Road

CONCORD, NH — An explosion on the Concord Heights on Monday night led to a large homeless camp and woods fire.

Around 5:30 p.m., a resident on Old Loudon Road heard an explosion at a nearby homeless camp located between the road and Portsmouth Street. The resident told Patch they looked around the area, saw a massive fire in the woods near homeless camps, and called the fire department.

The first arriving battalion commander reported “a large area” burning and requested a forestry unit. Firefighters ran lines from a nearby fire hydrant into the woods a few hundred yards from the street.

According to scanner chatter, the initial fire was about 30 feet by 50 feet and eventually spread to a 100-by-100-foot area. One of the firefighters told dispatch, “We’ve been here before.”

Another fire was reported about 10 minutes later on Interstate 89 north near Mile Marker 3.8. New Hampshire State Police arrived first and told fire dispatch there was no fire there. Around 6 p.m., a code gray was reported at Alton Woods, sending firefighters to the complex. The death was confirmed later.

A second forestry unit was sent to the area a little past 6 p.m. to help “dig it out” after knocking down most of the fire.

Firefighters finished overhauling the scene and began clearing around 6:30 p.m.
